My First Blog Candy Giveaway!

Hiya peeps! Today’s a big day! Why? Because it’s my first ever blog candy giveaway!:-)

In celebration of all of you, I’ve decided to do periodic (quarterly?) giveaways! You guys totally motivate me to keep crafting and creating. Thank you! So today, I’m giving away the following:

  1. Friendship Blooms stamp set from Stampin’ Up
  2. Blue flower accents
  3. 1 pack of 8.5″ x 11″ card stock in Stampin’ Up’s current In Colors
  4. 2 spools of polka dot ribbon

Just leave a comment and answer one question. This question is in light of me recently finishing Malcolm Gladwell’s book, Outliers. In his book, Gladwell wrote that anyone can master a skill or craft if they can invest 10,000 hours of practice. At 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, that’s almost five years. If you had five years to invest in a skill, talent, or craft of your choice, what would it be? A musical instrument? A sport? Academics? Leave your answer in a comment below and I’ll draw a random number. You have until next Wednesday, 1/28 at 10pm Pacific time to enter! (This post will remain a sticky until I draw the winner.)

The goods!

And here’s a card that I made from the set that I’m giving away. Good luck!

Definitely writing! I hope one day I can write full-time :)

Laura B - January 22, 2009 - 8:06 am

Right now, the first thing that comes to mind is web design. I’m a graphic designer that loves her paper and loves print design. I know that web design is what I need to be focusing on but I just can’t seem to stay focused with it. It would take me that long to get through it all because I’m sure I would have so many “faux starts”.

Ashley - January 22, 2009 - 8:15 am

Knitting! I am obsessed with it right now, and I wish I could knit all day every day, although I think my hands would get rather cramped! I’ve started about a million projects and have a real nack for never finishing them. Maybe with all that time I’d get around to finishing the ones I have, and starting some new ones!

tipperella - January 22, 2009 - 8:16 am

As I mentioned in my comment on your Outlier entry, I’ve been thinking about this alot. For me, I think it would be food (and specifically dessert) related. I would love to master pastry arts. What does it mean that this is the complete opposite of my current profession? (market research) ;-)

Erica - January 22, 2009 - 8:17 am

I recently started knitting and I would be thrilled to be able to master it. I have the basics down…

Kimberly B..... - January 22, 2009 - 8:26 am

I would invest 5 years in culinary school…I am horrible at cooking.

Mags - January 22, 2009 - 8:31 am

Learning foreign languages! Italian, French, Portugese, Spanish, German…

Shugar Bride - January 22, 2009 - 8:32 am

def. calligraphy.
It’s a beautiful art and it takes practice- and I think five years of full time calligraphy study is what I need ;)

melanie - January 22, 2009 - 8:40 am

I love your blog, it inspired me to make my own birthday cards even though I stink at it.

if I had to choose, I’d spend 5 years learning photography

susie - January 22, 2009 - 8:44 am

my dream all my life since i was five was to be a veterinarian! i even went all the way to ohio to pursue it. only problem? physics gave me nightmares and it wasn’t long before i had to change my major. i love animals and tried to fill the void by volunteering at shelters, but to be able to make a profession out of it and have my own clinic is a dream. so if i could learn anything it would be academics.

Kelley - January 22, 2009 - 8:47 am

I think I would choose photography. I LOVE to take pictures especially of my kids, and would love to take better ones. Love your blog by the way!

Angela - January 22, 2009 - 8:53 am

hi kelly. photography! my husband does it as a hobby, and i absolutely love his pictures. just havent had the time to learn all the ins and outs. if i had 5 years, this would give me the skill to be his second shooter!

JaymeLyn - January 22, 2009 - 9:00 am

i think i would choose reading–i’m fairly certain that I almost spent almost 3 years of my life reading!

Laura - January 22, 2009 - 9:05 am

If I had five years to invest my time I would learn how to be a professional baker.

betty - January 22, 2009 - 9:08 am

I would love to invest my time in sewing. I sewed a little in high school but I would love to make own clothing and actually wear it!

Zoe - January 22, 2009 - 9:14 am

Dancing! My parents pulled me out of ballet class fairly quickly when I was younger b/c they assumed I hated it (complained about the early hours too much :P ) but I wished they had kept me in! (Instead of keeping me in piano class when I used to complain about THAT all the time, lol)

Julie - January 22, 2009 - 9:20 am

If I had to invest FIVE years into something, I’d want something that really benefits my life, not just a hobby. Sure, I’d love to be able to paint (better), but honestly, five years is such a lot of time, and I’m not sure it would be worth it.

I’d want to perfect something that will drastically improve my lifestyle — either something athletic so that I am in excellent shape while I age (perhaps becoming a triathlete?) or cooking, because I already cook dinner 7 days/week but I’d love to improve (and obviously, eating is far more necessary that say, painting).

Christina - January 22, 2009 - 9:31 am

I would defintely invest 5 years in piano since I don’t get a chance to learn it when I was young. It might be hard to learn it at my age now, but I think I can master it in 5 years…=)

Traveling Fairy - January 22, 2009 - 9:32 am

I think it would be academics; getting a doctorate degree with an emphasis in Applied Behavior Analysis and working with children with ASD (Austism Spectrum Disorders). Loved working with those kids and the subject matter intrigues me.

Leah - January 22, 2009 - 9:36 am

I really want to learn how to make kids clothes. My mom made all my Sunday dresses when I was little, and I would love to give the same gift to my kids…when I have them!

Jen - January 22, 2009 - 9:39 am

Honestly this is tough, I am one of those self-help obsessed people that is always trying to find ways to improve myself or taking on new projects. Most of the time, once I learn something I often shelve it to learn something new (meaning to come back to the other project/hobby but always running short on time). I would probably say cooking/baking because its a skill that you so can easily share with others (and very large groups of people at a time, if needed). I’ve had an idea in my head for years of a business I want to start having to do with my love of cooking & baking.

BUT, athletics, photography, web design/blogging, knitting, stamping, crafting, jewelry making, sewing, academics etc. are all other hobbies that I love and pursue as well. I guess I will always be a “jack of all trades, master of none” because I can’t imagine giving any of them up!

Julia - January 22, 2009 - 9:41 am

Definitely cake decorating and pastries. I love to bake and I can decorate pretty well, but I would love to try more complicated designs.

Laura - January 22, 2009 - 9:45 am

I’d have to say photography. I’ve always loved it and I’ve taken maybe one class in it, but I’d love to learn more.

Haliwood - January 22, 2009 - 9:46 am

I would definitely learn to speek Greek! My FI’s family is Greek and I can barely communicate with his grandparents. Plus, we would like to teach our kiddies one day. Fingers crossed!

Christina - January 22, 2009 - 9:53 am

I would spend 5 years learning how to read, write, and speak Chinese! (maybe both Cantonese and Mandarin…not sure…I don’t know either so both are up for grabs.)

talda - January 22, 2009 - 9:54 am

i have to pick one? this is hard! it’s a toss up between learning to play the violin and learning korean [for real this time]. with practice i can easily gain a good hold on cooking and baking but playing the violin and learning korean? definitely need to devote time to that!

okay, i pick korean. :-)

Jayne - January 22, 2009 - 9:55 am

Not the most original (seeing as how it’s been named a couple of times already), but I would say cooking. Nothing makes me happier than good food.

ringo - January 22, 2009 - 9:55 am

There are so many things that I would love to invest time in. One of my goals is to be able to speak French fluently! I took years of French in high school and a year in college, but when I was in Paris, I couldn’t communicate in French! My fiance (then boyfriend) still makes fun of my attempts at speaking French in Paris.

Thanks for the giveaway, Kelly! I love your blog!

ettiene - January 22, 2009 - 9:56 am

I would learn how to host cocktail parties. Its a odd talent to want to learn but everytime I host a party I tend to get a bit frazzeled and if i invested all that time in learning how to throw a great party I am sure they would be fabulous and help me connect with friends.

Nathalie - January 22, 2009 - 10:17 am

I would love to make every single recipe from Giada de Laurentiis’ cookbooks. :)

Hope - January 22, 2009 - 10:21 am

Writing! I would love to earn a living as a professional writer.

E @ Oh!Apostrophe - January 22, 2009 - 10:25 am

I’d love to master photography! My grandfather was a master photographer, and I’d love to have the time to devote to it to get even near his level.

Thanks for the great giveaway!

Meaghan - January 22, 2009 - 10:41 am

I’m reading Outliers right now! Sooo good. I would spend my time mastering a second language – Spanish!

Nancy - January 22, 2009 - 10:57 am

I would love to go to culinary school. I’ve been contemplating it for a while, but due to our financial situation just continued working.

Melanie - January 22, 2009 - 11:15 am

It’s a toss up – either something on the culinary side because I really love to cook or my new passion, gardening. I love the idea of growing my own herbs, fruits and veggies…it’s been very satisfying to watch them come to life!

Kelly - January 22, 2009 - 11:16 am

I would love to make pastries and open up my own coffee shop!! Cupcakes, cookies… Yummy

Liz - January 22, 2009 - 11:18 am

This is a toughie. Being a gemini makes it even harder as I want to do it all and be a perfectionist in all of them. But since I must choose one…I would say interior design. I love decorating and choosing different colors and fabrics with different textures. I can spend hours :)

Kristin - January 22, 2009 - 11:25 am

I’ve always wanted to learn to play the drums. I can barely keep a beat going, but I think if I practiced and put my all into it, I could do it! :)

Patty D. - January 22, 2009 - 11:25 am

What a fun question! I think I would want to spend the time mastering scuba diving. I do it recreationally now, but I know I would feel more comfortable diving with more training and I could go see the really awesome shipwrecks that are too deep for me to get to now. Your life is at risk every time you dive, so it’s really important to me to get more training.

Ali - January 22, 2009 - 11:47 am

I think I would like to study physical therapy/physical training. It is a much needed field with an aging population and a safe fallback in our unstable economy. That sounds too serious – my fun answer is learning to master the letterpress!

Lisa Tse - January 22, 2009 - 11:50 am

I’ve always wanted to learn how to play a violin or piano.

Lauren - January 22, 2009 - 12:11 pm

I would choose either art or violin.. I’m not sure which.

Emilyn - January 22, 2009 - 12:30 pm

I just recently finished going to culinary school to become a pastry chef. If I could, I would love to continue my education and learn from some of the best Pastry Chefs around the world.

The Husband - January 22, 2009 - 12:37 pm

Can I join this contest too? =) j/k If I had to invest 10,000 hours into a talent, craft, or skill, I’d put my time into loving my wife even more.

Readers of The Sunset House, thanks for supporting my wife’s blog!

Junage - January 22, 2009 - 12:37 pm

Dance! I danced all through high school and college and now take classes as a form of exercise and as a creative outlet. But I would love to be a really strong technical dancer and be like one of the contestants on So You Think You Can Dance? or America’s Best Dance Crew.

Kimberly B. - January 22, 2009 - 12:50 pm

awww your husband is so adorable!!!

jaycee - January 22, 2009 - 1:01 pm

Can I master becoming Martha Stewart/Jill of all trades? =)

Jackie - January 22, 2009 - 1:33 pm

I would master the romance languages — I’ve got French, so I’d focus becoming fluent in Spanish and Italy. Then, of course, I’d get my butt to Europe to travel around.

renaissancetrophywife - January 22, 2009 - 2:04 pm

Wow, great question. I’ve invested years into learning things that I no longer use every day (violin, academics), but if I had another 5 years to learn something, I’d want to go abroad to study art, or winemaking, from some of the families who’ve been doing it for years.

Christina T - January 22, 2009 - 2:14 pm

I would invest my time in learning how to bake. I’m a desserts kind of girl, and would love to learn all the tricks of the trade. Luckily I have blogs like yours to learn some recipes from!

Cindy - January 22, 2009 - 2:14 pm

I think it would have to be baking or photography, both I love but feel like I haven’t had enough time to devote to right now.

I just wanted to share that, you don’t have to include me in the drawing. :) I know I won’t have time to play with the cool stamping stuff, so I’d rather someone else get it.

By the way, how do you set up the background for your pictures? The white background make the objects stand out so much better!

Amy T - January 22, 2009 - 4:20 pm

Ok I must admit that I’ve been reading your blog religiously but have not commented. Now that’s off my chest, I would say dancing. I love my hiphop class at my local gym and I am so sad when the class is over. If I could devote 5 years to something, that would be it. It’s fun plus it’s exercise!

tiffany - January 22, 2009 - 5:00 pm

i would love to master photography and become a professional – it’s my dream job!

Nancy - January 22, 2009 - 5:25 pm

Photography! So I can capture all the memories of my family and friends.
and Dancing! I enjoy it so much that it doesn’t even feel like a workout (and the svelte body that comes with it!)

Jill - January 22, 2009 - 5:36 pm

Piano! I always wish I had learned when I was younger.. as I get older it just seems hard to find the time to learn!

Alison - January 22, 2009 - 6:39 pm

Photography! All my pictures are blurry because I can’t get the iso right!

Anna - January 22, 2009 - 7:45 pm

I would definitely invest my 10,000 hours in either photography or travel writing.

sarah - January 22, 2009 - 8:32 pm

I would learn how to play the cello! Such a beautiful sounding instrument. :)

Linda - January 22, 2009 - 9:47 pm

interesting comment!
I would play an instrument – maybe classical guitar. But- my current art is scrapbooking that I’ve been picking up slowly.

Joyce - January 22, 2009 - 10:26 pm

gosh, i can only choose one? i love trying new things, but i’m not particularly good at one thing. i definitely love being a student though (without having to write the essays). hmmm….writing? cooking? designing? piano or guitar? photography? i think i’ll have to invest 5 years in cooking because we all gotta eat right? =)

Iris - January 22, 2009 - 10:53 pm

Art :) All kinds – sketching, painting, design, clay…10,000 hours would equal a lot of great time to explore and practice! Your cards are so creative and inspiring! Thanks :)

Crystal - January 23, 2009 - 12:02 am

Ahh, just one, lets’s see…I would love to learn how to speak Tagalog! I don’t know why my parents never taught me when I was little.
I can understand some of it though, so that’s a start :) .

Marivic Kutz - January 23, 2009 - 5:37 am

For 5 years, I would really love how to learn how to play the piano – Yes, I had some piano when I was a child. Now that I see my own children playing piano and I nag them to play for me, I realize, heck I should learn how to play for myself esp. since I know that they’ll leave dear mom for college in a few years :-(

Monica - January 23, 2009 - 5:47 am

My skill of choice to invest 5 years in would be photography. I’d love to travel to different parts of the world and hone my skills by photographing different place and people :)

Chris - January 23, 2009 - 6:07 am

It would defiantly be sewing for me. I get together once a week with my husband’s grandma who’s an amazing seamstress and is teaching me. It would be great to have that kind of knowledge in only 5 years verses a life time.

Plus then I could go and kick ass on Project Runway!!! :)

Jilian - January 23, 2009 - 7:20 am

Haha – This is my problem in life – I can not focus on just one thing. That’s why I have piles of fabric, beads galore, yarn, stamps, paper – etc etc etc. I often wish I had just one passion – I think life would be easier and my house would be less cluttered :)

1 – Gardening – That would be vegetable and flowers. I’d love to cook all my meals from the fruits of my garden and have a colorful yard worthy of a magazine layout.

2 – Crafting/Design/Art. Be it paper. quilting. photography. jewelry. clothes.

3 – Music. Violin. Mandolin. Piano. Guitar. Singing.

4 – Dancing. All of it. Salsa. Tango. Two Step. Tap. Bollywood. Quickstep.

5 – Snowboarding. Does he say you can teach yourself to have no fear? Then I could hit the halfpipe and big air competitions :)

Hmm – can I just decide to spend 20 years becoming a Renaissance woman? If I had to choose just one it would probably be in the design/craft area – that’s been my passion since I was a wee one :)

Christine - January 23, 2009 - 7:58 am

Hi! I would love to learn how to sew and design clothing or learn to paint like Hopper or Van Gogh. Love your blog by the way! :)

Ginny - January 23, 2009 - 8:02 am

I would spend 5 years mastering my sewing machine so that I could make clothes and accessories for my home. That would be a really helpful skill for me to have!

Laura - January 23, 2009 - 9:14 am

This is a difficult decision. I want to say hip hop dancing but I also want to learn to make my own clothes! Let’s go with hip hop for now! Thanks! Love your blog!

chasingkismet - January 23, 2009 - 11:51 am

If I had 5 years to invest, I would learn how to become Martha Stewart.. hehe jk. Honestly, I would love to become more computer savvy, learn how to create websites and maybe even enter the world of graphic design. Thanks for a wonderful giveaway! I love your website, and I get a lot of inspiration from your work. Keep up the great work!

Jen - January 23, 2009 - 1:52 pm

I would love to master a foreign language.

Which one? Hard to decide. French is so romantic. Italian is sexy. Spanish is so useful and can be widely applied.

Though Tagalog is the Filipino language my parents speak and would love to have know that tradition.

Alison - January 23, 2009 - 6:29 pm

i would love to travel around italy and learn how to make delicious italian food!

annie - January 23, 2009 - 10:01 pm

awe, i agree.. your hubby’s comment is TOO cute!

my answer is more for the future. if i had to pick just ONE thing to invest all that time in, I would definitely say i’d invest it into being a good parent. 10,000 hours or 5 years all centered around being selfless, loving and patient. :) i’m sure if i become great by the end of the 5 yrs, the proceeding years should be a snap!

Karen - January 24, 2009 - 6:52 am

Hi :) I love your blog but have never commented. I think I would devote 5 years in researching about sex trafficking and after-care interventions, so that I can make a difference in that area. :) Plus, it would be awesome to get to travel around the world while doiing the research!

michelle rosborough - January 24, 2009 - 7:40 am

Pastry chef
My cakes are good but they could be better

Chay - January 24, 2009 - 5:22 pm

I haven’t commented in awhile, but I am curious if you’re any closer to hosting any stamp/craft classes. And an answer to your question, if I had 5 years to master a craft, it would be photography. I love it and have fun with it today, but it would be great to learn all details, variations, & techniques of the craft.

Cindy - January 24, 2009 - 10:27 pm

If I had to choose a skill to invest 5 years doing, I would choose public speaking. I think I lack the confidence and, obviously, the skill to speak in front of people. I get a lot of anxiety when it’s just a classroom of people, so I would like to overcome that fear of failure or fear of looking “stupid.” Also, I think that would benefit me with my future degree in Business.

rita - January 24, 2009 - 10:43 pm

I would spend the time mastering piano! I love piano music- it’s pretty, it’s relaxing, and it can convey so many emotions. I even bought myself a piano keyboard…but I haven’t found the time to teach myself yet :P

Rae - January 24, 2009 - 11:03 pm

I would love to master the art of sewing. My grandmother who passed when my mom was only 3 years old was an avid sewer and to this day, my mom has many of her original patterns for various thing like pillow designs, kimonos etc….but no one has ever put them to use due to not knowing how to sew.
If one day I did learn to master sewing, I would looooove to carry on her legacy by finally being the first in our family to continue the use of her patter designs!

Clarice - January 25, 2009 - 11:21 am

I’m terrible at cooking, so it would be ironic to master that. A close second would be photography.

cindy lowe - January 25, 2009 - 8:57 pm

Hey Kelly! It was so nice to meet you at the wedding! :) Nice blog!! :)

Michelle W - January 25, 2009 - 10:30 pm

Definitely cooking! I’m horrible at it, but I love eating!

daniel - January 25, 2009 - 10:51 pm

Nice blog! I would… want to be a great guitar player. I know its really common and everyone probably wants to be a great guitar player… but what can I say?

I keep hearing about that book Outliers… sounds VERY interesting. That’s the book that talks about why hockey stars are all born in the beginning of the year right?

Nancy E.J. - January 25, 2009 - 11:15 pm

I’ve always dreamt of learning to speak all of the romance languages. I have two down and (obviously) a few more to go. I think Italian is next on my list. I would LOVE to do that for 5 years. How fabulous!

tgh - January 26, 2009 - 6:25 am

Interior design. I would love to one day have my own interior design business

BTW…great blog.

Ivana - January 26, 2009 - 1:47 pm

it’s really hard to pick one! i would probably learn how to sew or probably also learning french!

Jane - January 26, 2009 - 9:28 pm

I would spend my time practicing methods/skills that would make me a more effective teacher :) Have a great time in San Diego!

lisa n. - January 26, 2009 - 11:15 pm

i’d love to master cooking! :)

Teale - January 27, 2009 - 5:21 am

I am a lurker, but had to de-lurk for the contest:)

I would love to learn how to sew! I consider myself pretty crafty when it comes to other hobbies, but that’s one that has always intimidated me!

Alice - January 27, 2009 - 8:27 am

Hi from Italy! I would speak (and write) a perfect English, the best language of the world!
Thanks for a chance to win!
Alice

Cheryl - January 27, 2009 - 4:35 pm

I think I’d love to focus on something like photography or web/graphic design. Or learn Chinese! I just don’t know if I’d want to spend 5 years learning Chinese 8 hours a day/5 days a week! :D

Sheila - January 28, 2009 - 10:05 am

I think I would enjoy learning more about organization. I am a type A personality and would like to learn how to become even better organized and then help others become more organized!

Annelies - January 28, 2009 - 10:35 am

I’m following a birdwatching course right now, and if I had the time I would definitely attend more courses about nature fe mamals, herbs or trees. I think it’s all so fascinating! Thanks for a chance to win! Greetings from Belgium, Annelies

Nicole - January 28, 2009 - 12:16 pm

Hi Kelly Nicole, there are so many things I hope to accomplish during my lifetime, but a real craft that I do hope to ensue SOON is lampwork (crafting glass beads by hand). I LOVE LOVE LOVE lampwork beads and hope that I can try my hand at this before long.

While paper is still (and always will be) my first love, lampwork beads just amaze me. To craft one with perfection takes time, patience, creativity and a keen eye and steady hands! Thanks for the chance to win your goodies!

Blessings, Nicole

sherry - February 1, 2009 - 1:36 pm

def learn another language or two FLUENTLY!!
