Euro Trip Part 3: Madrid

Where should we go on vacation this year? The Hubs and I want to take a trip before he starts school this fall. Preferably somewhere affordable and within a five hour flight from San Francisco. I was thinking of either Hawaii (the big island), Boston, or New York. Hawaii would be relaxing. If we visit the other two cities, we might need a vacation after our vacation.

Speaking of vacations, Madrid is a wonderful city to visit. Despite the fact that Hubs had major jet lag and spent the daylight hours sleeping in our hotel room, I had a great time and managed to take some pretty pictures while I waited for my husband to awake from his slumber.

Madrid

At the Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris grabbing breakfast before flying to Madrid. Even McDonalds tastes better in Europe. What the heck.
Madrid

I was amused to find this ad on the back of my airplane magazine. I wish I had a chance to see Tila Tequila dubbed in Spanish. Wait, no I don’t. But it would’ve been HI-LAR-I-OUS.
Madrid

I love airports. Madrid’s is especially pretty.

Madrid

While Hubs was jetlagged and snoozing in our hotel room, I pulled out my tripod and took photos off the balcony.
Madrid

We eventually got out to see the city sites. Madrid, like all European cities, is filled with gorgeous architecture.
Madrid

The Royal Palace of Madrid was one of our first tourist stops. It’s the largest palace in western Europe, although only a handful of rooms are open to visitors.
Madrid

Obligatory jumping picture.:-)
Madrid

After day one in Madrid, Hubs was still exhausted. So, he napped while I climbed onto the balcony to take night shots. I got lots of practice playing with long shutter speeds.
Madrid

Madrid is gorgeous!

definitely someplace relaxing like hawaii. i started grad school last fall and trust me, between work and school there’s not much relaxing going on and i’m not even going to haas!

I’m very impressed that you dragged a tripod all the way over to Madrid! Love that your hubby takes such great pictures, I am working on that with mine. Beautiful night shots!

I would opt for Big Island! I’ve been there three times because I love that there’s enough stuff to do to keep you busy but also enough beach so that you can relax and do nothing.

I’ve lived in both Boston and New York so I’m trying to be as unbiased as possible when I say this but New York is the clear winner here!

The Big Island is awesome. Very beautiful and relaxing with awesome isolated beaches… but with a lot of things to do if you get bored of sitting on a beach.

OMG these pictures are awesome! Last time I went to Europe it was years ago with my family and it was before the DSLR days. I so want to go back again with Daniel.

And ditto with Daniel regarding Big Island!! It was super relaxing but it can be adventurous too if you are into hiking and kayaking. :)

I think you would get some great photos in both New York and Boston, however, you’re correct in stating that you would have to have a vacation to recover from your vacation in the first two Destinations. Hawaii would be truly relaxing. I’ve never been, but it seems like it would be. I’m actually going to a timeshare presentation and the reward for going is a free flight for 2 roundtrip, and 2 nights free. Each additional night is $99. So we’re planning on going later this year. Great pictures by the way. And I would totally bring my tripod where ever I went to vacation :)

Beautiful photos! Spain is at the top of my to-visit list.

I’m putting in a vote for Hawaii, although I haven’t been to the big island (I went to Oahu for WAY too short of a trip but it was still amazing.) Hawaii can be expensive though.

Although it’s more than a five-hour trip, I also suggest Istanbul. I went there last summer and fell in love. Getting there takes time, but the city itself is affordable, there is SO much to do, the people are extremely friendly and the food is delicious.

I love your prada bag. I was wondering where did you get it? I have been looking for that bag for a while, I still can’t find it. I have checked neiman marcus & nordstrom.
