What's in a Name? Everything.

For or some reason, I have this crazy idea about starting a photography business. I know it’s risky and it may not be a successful endeavor. But, if there’s any good time to try, it’s now.

I’ve always loved photography. When I only had a tiny point and shoot camera, I used to experiment and take pictures of everything. Flowers, food, buildings, people, you name it, I took it. And after Hubs and I got married, my love for photography grew tenfold. I still adore browsing through the hundreds of wedding photographer blogs saved on my Google reader. When Hubs got me my first DSLR camera and lenses, I was addicted. With his encouragement, I cautiously stepped out of my comfort zone and began taking steps to try this photography stuff out. Step one: I got myself signed up for classes. Step two: I’ve been practicing manual shooting over the past few weeks.

That leads me to step three: choose a business name. This one has me stuck. Hubs and I have been brainstorming and we came up with a few names that are ok. Hubs really wants me to use my name somewhere in the business name because he believes it’ll be easier for people to identify with me. I think my name is boring as heck and I’d love to use something more creative. I am totally going to name our kids something cool and creative, like Apple or Kingston, so if they ever want to start a business using their names, they’ll already be set for life. Since I can’t change my given name, I need your help! What should I name my business? Below are the names that Hubs and I came up with. Which of these names, if any, do you like? Do you think I should use some form of my real name? Or ditch the name and go with something totally unrelated? I’d love to hear your thoughts!

How about “Sunset Glass Photography”. Or “Glass Sunset Photography”

You’re right, this is a tough one!

These are great names! One thing my dad has mentioned was that over the years, he’s noticed that it’s hard to remember peoples business names that aren’t tied to their real names. I know just naming your business “Kelly Chau Photography” sounds pretty boring, but my dad has often tried to recommend a person’s business to someone, and would say something along the lines of “John Doe is a great photographer… for the life of me I cant remember his business name…” This just happens in passing, as if you’re by the internet, you can probably look the person up (although if your name is pretty common, its harder)… but if you’re out and about and someone asks someone for a recommendation, its much easier to tell someone to write down “kellychau.com” or “chauphotography.com” then it is to try to remember some clever name of a business… as first they’d have to remember your name, and then remember your business name, and so on and so forth…

Sorry that was a long story :) But I hope it helps a bit!

Hmm I kinda like Studio Sunset because of its simplicity. It makes a nice subtle reference to The Sunset House but it’s still different enough to make people realize it’s a completely unique part of who you are and is a “new venture.” I think straying away from your name is perfectly okay too.

it makes sense to capitalize on your current domain name, but then again “sunset” is a pretty common word. Ciao Kelly is cute…but I especially liked Snapped by Kelly Photography.

I think I would vote for Sunset House Photography and capitalize on your already established domain or go with Cathleya’s suggestion of Kelly Chau Photography. I know it’s boring but it’s also much easier to remember. Plus I like the way it sounds! I don’t think you have a boring name at all.

Personal name allows you to create a personal brand. A lot of the photographers with the best brands use personal names: Jasmine Star, Jessica Claire, Becker etc. We used orange turtle because it allows both of us to be the brand and I think its pretty memorable.

Tough decision though, there are a lot of arguments on both sides… but most photographers end up going with their own name.

Our friends Ariel and Josh used their future kids names for their business name (Anika London). So cute. Maybe you can do something similar too! :)

I would go with your name, even if you think it’s boring. I agree with Daniel and Cathleya. All the wedding photographers’ blogs I stalk are named after themselves. Those are the ones I remember the most. And to add to Daniel’s list of photographers, my favorite, Jose Villa is obviously named after himself.

My husband, a business management consultant, gave me 2 free hours of consulting on this topic (haha, we are funny) and he came up with the same opinion that Cathleya suggested. That it’s best to go with your own name when it comes to photography.

That said, their are studios like f8, altf, photo-gen, and one love photo that created a brand that works really well for them.

And I think Sunset House is good because it isn’t cheesy. Glass house reminds me of that one thriller movie (very badly made)

Another options Sunset House Studio or Sunset House Studio Photography. ;) Hey I model part time. Let me know if you need a model for getting a website together :)

Chay - April 1, 2009 - 5:16 pm

I also know a great make-up artist too!

Chay - April 1, 2009 - 5:17 pm

SHS Photography (Sunset House Studio Photography) leaves you with great options for a great logo.

If you’d like to keep your name in the business name, I think it would be nice to have “Snapped by Kelly Chau” instead of Snapped by Kelly Photography. I also like Sunset House Photography or Sunset Studio Photography

You know, Mrs. Avocado just wrote a whole set of posts on picking a name for her photography business on her personal blog. Since her husband is a marketing analyst, he was able to actually look into what is the best way to go with a photography business. I can’t remember his specific findings, but I know they leaned towards using at least a portion of your name in the business name. She ended up going with her first name, and a made up middle name since she thought hers was boring. So maybe you could do something like that.

Hi Kelly! It was so nice meeting you and Andrew at Crepevine last week. I really hope you do start your own photo/DIY/arts&crafts business. Both David and I think you’ll be (even more) super successful!

As for business names, I like the following:

Sunset House Photography
Sunset Studio
Sunglass Photography (a portmanteau of some of your options)
Kelly Nicole Photography

For some reason I think ‘Kelly Nicole’ might sell better than ‘Kelly Chau’? Maybe I’m just being weird.

Anyway, good luck!!!

von - April 2, 2009 - 6:48 am

I’m liking Sunset House Photography or Kelly Chau

The other options seemed a bit fussy to me. Ciao Kelly is cute though but not sure if it would be right for a photog biz.

Christina - April 2, 2009 - 8:58 am

I like Kelly Chau photography – a lot of the photographers in my area use their own names (don’t use Kelly Nicole though, it’s too common). There’s also a Glass House photography in my area too (midwest). I think your name is nice and short and cute!

christine - April 2, 2009 - 2:34 pm

hey if you decided to jump on the bandwagon for wedding photography, want to help me do my engagement photoshoot for your portofolio? :P it’s soooo expensive to find a decent photographer!

Janet - April 2, 2009 - 6:08 pm

Personally, I like Ciao Kelly because it’s a play on words that people can appreciate once they find out your last name =) And Studio Sunset is another favorite. I chose those two because I a name that would be general enough to use for any future business endeavor you think of! Anything with “Photography” in it would seem limiting, but if you should want to do event coordinating, wedding planning, invitations, etc. then a more general, catchy name would be great!

Kimberly B..... - April 2, 2009 - 8:17 pm

I picked Ciao Kelly Photography because I like brain teasers and different play on words……I think it’s really clever. I’ve always loved how Italians greet ladies as “Ciao Bella”

Mandy Sue - April 3, 2009 - 10:46 am

HA! I didn’t realize earlier that Mrs. Avocado herself already posted that information before me!

In regards to Tiffany’s comment, I know there is already a Kelli Nicole Photography, which could be very confusing for people!
