Cupcake Wars

A few weeks ago, Little Bro and I had a paper craft boot camp to assemble the invitations for his upcoming wedding. Christina (who I will get to call my sister-in-law soon, which is so much easier than calling her my brother’s fiancee) and I both brought cupcakes to help ease the invitation making pain. I picked up some yummy delights from Kara’s Cupcakes in Palo Alto and Christina brought some tasty Sprinkles cakes over.

Of course, this meant a taste test was in order.

In the packaging department, Sprinkles took the cake. ;) The box was sturdier and seemed to fit the cupcakes better than the container used to house Kara’s Cupcakes.

Flavors from Sprinkes: Red velvet, vanilla with coconut topping, chocolate, and ____ (forgot the last flavor).

Flavors from Kara’s: Meyer lemon, fleur de sel (salted caramel), chocolate velvet, and sweet vanilla

Kara’s Fleur de Sel cupcake. Mmmmm. Very tasty. Also very rich.

Kara’s Meyer Lemon. My favorite in the box.

I wish I had a close-ups of the Sprinkles cupcakes, but I must’ve ate them all before I clicked the shutter. It’s no wonder my bridesmaid dress doesn’t zip up all the way.

The consensus? Kara’s cupcakes were softer and more moist than Sprinkles, but some of the cupcakes (especially the chocolate flavored cakes) were over-the-top sweet. Sprinkles cakes were definitely drier, but less sweet (frosting included), making them easier to consume. My favorite picks were Sprinkles’ red velvet and Kara’s Meyer lemon.

In conclusion, give me any cupcake from either of these two stores and I’m not complainin’ one bit! :)

Yum.. Those look super good! I’ve always wanted to try Sprinkles cupcakes.

Mmm…I love cupcakes. I’m totally addicted to Sprinkle’s Red Velvet. I have to try Kara’s Meyer Lemon next time. Thanks for the tip! The pictures are making me hungry again. :-)

have you tried Teacake Bakery in Emeryville? here’s a link: http://www.fryhole.com/?p=624 I love these cupcakes…. they’re AMAZING… Wed’s they have Carrot Cake!

I love Kara’s! I’ve also heard good things about Sibby’s in San Mateo but I haven’t had a chance to try them yet.

OMG, i salivated over the pictures. They look so good! I don’t care how good Sprinkles and Kara’s cupcakes are, they don’t beat the red velvet birthday cake you baked for me. THAT was delicious!

One of my girlfriends is an avid baker and she promised to bake me some the next time we hang out. I’ll be sure to save you some!

I love Sprinkles! Were you in LA over Labor Day weekend? Or do they have Sprinkles up north now?

I am probably going to get hate emails (hahaha) but I think Sprinkles is way over-rated. I stood in a long line that wrapped around the building to spend $50 on assorted cupcakes only to bite into cupcakes that were really dry. I prefer moist, wedding cakes. There’s a place called “delicious cakes” in Addison, TX not too far from where I live and their cakes are so yummy and moist. They also make birthday and babyshower cakes.

someone else mentioned it above but i’ve heard really good things about sibbys! I need to try Karas, I was just in the Sunset two days ago! I grew up there too but moved down to socal. I miss the fog but it was cold this weekend! brrrr
